Background

Think-alouds is a strategy that is beneficial for any grade level and any subject. It is particularly beneficial to use with dependent readers because it helps students to put their thoughts into words, while also giving the teacher insight as to how the student is thinking. Research shows that when students are cognitively and metacognitively aware, they learn how to think about processing information. Think-alouds also provide students the opportunity to hear how other students think.

A think-aloud is just what it sounds like; you are thinking out loud. A think-aloud can be used in numerous ways to help you think about how your are thinking.Use this strategy if you want to prepare for a text you getting ready to read by making a prediction. Use the think-aloud strategy when something you read doesn’t make sense. As you think out loud, you may decide that you need to reread, or you might ask yourself a question and then continue reading to find the answer. While reading, you can also think out loud about what you are visualizing from the story and you can also make connections.

You can use a think aloud any time, for any subject. In math you can think out loud when trying to work through a problem.
