Somebody Wanted But So

Background

This is a comprehension strategy that should be used for “after” reading the text. It provides the students with looking at characters and events, conflicts and resolutions. It also gives them the opportunities to write summaries from different points of view. It can also be used as a prediction tool. Even though this strategy was developed for narrative text it can be adapted to nonfiction which allows this strategy to be used in the content areas. The heading could be changed to Something Happened…Then This Occurred.

Directions

1. After reading the story in a notebook make a four column chart.

2. At the top of each column use these headings: Somebody (top of column 1), Wanted (top of column 2), But (top of column 3) and So (top of column 4) Example: Using Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Somebody                  Wanted                  But                            So

Goldilocks                                             To eat she was hungry             The first two bowls were            When acids and bases are mixed a chemical                                                                                                                             either too hot or too cold                    reaction will occur.

3. If using for a content area in Science for example combining different substances and observing the reactions they cause: Example:

SOMETHING                             THEN THIS OCCURRED                                            SO

HAPPENED…

We mixed a base (baking soda)                  This caused an explosion like a volcano.                                          When acids and bases are mixed a with an acid(vinegar) in a large bowl                                                                                                                      chemical reaction will occur.

4. You would continue to complete the chart with all characters in the story.
